1.  Francie Has 4 Beautiful Girls!

2.  A Typical Down South Westies Day!

We start our day early.  Usually Chloe wakes us around 5:30 AM to let us know it is time to get up.  We go downstairs, greet the other 4, and then go out for our first nature break.  They usually just look at us...wondering why we woke them so early...Read More

3.  Westie Puppy Shower!

We enjoy getting those creative "New Puppy Announcements" many people send out to their friends when they get a Down South Westie!  The addition of a new Westie pup is an exciting experience that must be shared!

More and more people are giving "Puppy Showers" for their friends who get new puppies.  Oftentimes we are asked for suggestions.  This link is dedicated to giving suggestions for those who want gift ideas.  If you have suggestions to add, please let us know so we can add it to the page...Read More!

4.  Dangerous Plants For Dogs!

Have you ever noticed your dog munching on your indoor greenery or outside plants?  There are many plants that can be poisonous to dogs.  Dogs don’t eat plants due to a lack of something in their diets—they just like to eat them!  The degree of toxicity varies from mild mouth irritation or stomach upset to being downright deadly! The following are considered dangerous houseplants for dogs:

• Ivy
• Philodendron
• Dieffenbachia
• Easter lily
• Caladium
• False Jerusalem cherry
• Oleander
• Azalea
• Rhododendron
• Common or cherry laurel
• Mistletoe
• Tulip/Narcissus bulbs

When treating your lawn or garden with fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides, always keep your animals away from the area until the area dries completely.

Here is a reminder list of foods never to feed your dogs:

• Avocodo
• Chocolate
• Coffee
• Macadamia nuts
• Onions
• Grapes
• Raisins
• Garlic

5.  Do You Have A Swimming Westie?

If your Westie is accustomed to swimming with you in your swimming pool, have you noticed anything negative related to skin problems or ear problems?  Does the chlorine treatment or salt treatment have any negative affects on your Westie?  Is it better to use chlorine or the salt system?  If you have some info to be noted, email us and we will update this article. thomas@downsouthwesties.com

Reply from Vicki:  Our two Westies go swimming in our 3 acre pond.  My vet gave me a product called MalAcetic Otic by DermaPet.  I use this for ear cleaning.  I think it works so well because it is an ear cleaning solution with a drying agent in it as well.   We've had no ear infections.

6.  Grooming Your Westie!

Of all the questions we are asked, questions about grooming is always at the top of the list.  Do you have your Westie groomed several times a year?  Have you ever considered how much you pay annually?  Over approximately 15 years?  You will want to read this!  Read More...

7.  Trip To Scotland!

Our trip to Scotland begins on Monday, May 8.  We fly to Edinburgh and stay the first night in a hotel near the airport.  The next 10 nights will be spent moving to a different B & B every two nights.  We hope to meet some Westie breeders.  Our daughter will take care of our clan while we are away.

8.  Why Dogs Don't Live Longer Than People!

Being a veterinarian, I was called to examine...More!
