How long has
it been since you had your best friend(s) checked for
internal parasites? Your Westie needs to be vet checked at
least annually, if not every six months to be sure he is
parasite free. Heart worm treatment controls some worms, but
tapeworms are not controlled as easily.
Tapeworm
segments resemble small pieces of white rice. They may be
seen in a bowel movement or clinging to the hair near your
pet's tail. Your Westie can get tapeworms by eating a flea.
If you find your
Westie is constantly licking his anal area, your best bet is
to visually inspect the area and his stool for bits of
tapeworm, which look like rice.
When you take him
for his checkup, collecting a stool sample to take with you
will help ensure that he is worm free.
Remember, some
Westies are allergic to fleas, which results in skin
problems. Doing your best to keep him "flea free" is very
important.
