Frequently
Asked Westie Questions To Westie Breeders
- Q.
HOW MUCH ARE YOUR WESTIE PUPPIES?
- A. A good
quality Westie puppy will cost $1,000 to $1,500.
Q. WHEN IS A
WESTIE PUPPY OLD
ENOUGH TO GO TO IT'S NEW HOME?
A. Pups should never go to their new home before 8 weeks. The breeder
should spend lots of time
socializing your Westie puppy and you will be glad they did.
Q. HOW CAN I CHOOSE A WESTIE PUPPY WITHOUT MAKING A TRIP TO YOUR LOCATION?
A. A breeder should have lots of photos of puppies, sire, and dam. Your
breeder should be happy to answer questions you
may have about the puppy, sire, and dam.
Q. HOW DO I GET MY WESTIE PUPPY?
A. We suggest that you not purchase a pup from a breeder who is willing to ship
a pup. You should fly or drive to get you new pup. That way, you can see mom and
dad in real life!
- Q. IS THERE ANY
OTHER DELIVERY SERVICE OTHER THAN AIR FLIGHT?
- A. There are
van delivery services, but we do not recommend them.
Q. HOW DO I KNOW THE
WESTIE PUPPY I CHOOSE IS HEALTHY?
A. All pups should be up to date on their shots and worming when they leave
for their new home. Each
one should be checked by a veterinarian. To take your pup on the airline as "carry
on" he must have an approved "Health Certificate" to accompany the pup on the
trip. The breeder should take the pup back to the vet for that certificate
that is good for only 10 days. The usual $40 fee is always passed on to the buyer. Be sure to check out
their
health guarantee.
Q. HOW DO I PAY FOR MY WESTIE PUPPY?
A. Most breeders will be willing to accept your personal check. Over all
the years we took personal checks, we never had a single bad one. A deposit is
usually required to
hold your puppy. This is applied to the total cost.
Q. ARE YOUR WESTIE PUPPIES REGISTERED?
A. We suggest you never buy a pup that is not registered with the American
Kennel Club. Other registrations may mean the breeder has been suspended
from AKC because of improper breeding practices. Some registrations
require only the owners to confer with others to verify the dog is a Westie,
when all the while he may not be "pure blood". You
should receive necessary papers to
register your pup as well as a copy of the
pedigree.
Q. DO YOU REQUIRE A
SPAY/NEUTER CONTRACT?
A. Pet/Companion pups are
usually sold with a neuter/spay contract and limited registration
(offspring of dogs with limited registration cannot be registered). The
reason we required a spay/neuter contract is to protect our breed line as well as
our name and reputation. If we let a pup go without a spay/neuter contract,
that pup could be bred to just any dog with health problems. Our name goes
on that pedigree. We have a great reputation and we wanted to keep it that
way. Show
Prospect pups are usually sold with co-ownership.
Q. WHEN DOES MY NEW WESTIE PUPPY HAVE TO GO TO THE VET?
A. Most breeders require you take your new pup to the vet within the first 3 working days
for a "Wellness Check". This is a
requirement for the health guarantee so make your appointment ahead of time. You
should take the puppy's shot record with you so your vet will know
his medical history. You can then set up another appointment for the remaining
vaccinations he will need. Your pup should have been checked by your
breeder's vet before you pick
him/her up.
Q. WILL YOU BE AVAILABLE FOR ANY QUESTIONS WE MIGHT HAVE AFTER GETTING OUR
NEW WESTIE PUPPY?
A. Never buy a pup without asking this question. Can you call or email?
Most breeders like to keep in touch with families to see how the puppies are doing.
We always consider it a treat to receive
photos of your pup in his new home to post on our Friends Page. Send us an
email with a picture in a .jpg file and we will post the pictures of any Westie on our
Friends Page for
30 days.
Q. WILL YOU GIVE ME
REFERENCES?
A. Never be afraid to
ask for references. If you are going to pay $1,000 - $1,500 for a pup, you
better ask questions! A reputable breeder will be delighted to give
you references. We always said, "Go to the Friends Page and pick out some
pups and owners and we will ask if they mind you contacting them with
questions". Our families were always ready to answer questions and we
never were afraid for that to happen.
is the source for all our puppy supplies, vaccines, etc. We are now using a water filtration system
exclusively for our dogs. The water will be better for them and we will see
what it does to their beards. Stay tuned! (The result is that it
works significantly. Beard stains can be caused by wet food, but if it
is caused by your public water, the Aquasana Home Water System works and
does not stain beards).
We chose the Aquasana Home Water System.
You can click on the banner below to read about it. We have it connected to
the sink in the grooming room.
